Let us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. 1 Corinthians 5:8
Beginning in the days of Moses as recorded in Exodus chapter 12, the people of God are commanded to celebrate the yearly feast of Passover. You did not just get to celebrate it, you had to. It was a mandatory celebration every year for all the people of God. Through the life, death, and resurrection of Christ, Jesus fulfilled the meaning of the Passover. Jesus became the Lamb of God who took away the sin of the world, this was the symbolism of the Passover celebration. It was all pointing forward towards Jesus.
After his resurrection, the early Christians proclaimed that it was no longer necessary to participate in this yearly celebration. But you want to hear something strange, they still celebrated it! They no longer had to, now they get to. It is still a celebration that is pointing towards Jesus. It is a fun, insightful, and deeply thought-provoking meal that helps the Christian believer see, more fully, the work of Christ.
I have stated that this year we will attempt to find ways to celebrate and better understand the seven feasts of Israel. So, this year, on the Thursday before Easter, we will gather in the fellowship hall of the church at 6 PM for a Passover celebration including a meal. And we will have the honor of being lead in the celebration by UMC general evangelist, Rev. Ric Wright.
I pray you can join with us. I pray it will be fun, filled with smiles and laughter. And I pray that it will be meaningful. I pray that it will help you see the work of Christ from the perspective of the first century Jew rather than just the 21st-century Christian. Anyone can attend and you don’t need reservations. But it would greatly help our planning if we have a good idea of who may attend. If you plan to spend the evening with us on April 1 at 6 PM, please contact the church office and have them put your name down and how many will be in your party. If you decide at the last minute to join us, but you have not signed up, don’t let that stop you. Come anyway. You will be blessed.
